Salford's 2024 Accounts Flagged a Cash Crunch. The Club Doesn't Exist Anymore.
Salford Red Devils finished above Leigh Leopards in the 2024 Super League table. Their accounts from that same year already showed a current asset base a fraction the size of their debts, a warning sign that, within eighteen months, proved fatal.
In the 2024 Super League season covered by these accounts, Salford finished 4th on 32 points, their best regular-season placing in years, only to be knocked out in the very first round of the play-offs, beaten in the eliminators by 5th-placed Leigh Leopards, who went on to reach the semi-finals themselves.
Turnover and staff costs aren't disclosed in this filing, but the numbers that are disclosed are stark. A loss before tax of around £1.5m sat alongside net liabilities of roughly £5m and estimated borrowings of around £4m, among the highest debt loads of any club in this dataset. Set against that £4m of borrowings, current assets came to only around £0.5m, one of the thinnest liquidity cushions in the whole dataset, and cash in the bank was close to nothing at all.
Employee numbers also fell by roughly 11% over the year, a contraction rather than the growth seen at several other clubs in this data, consistent with a club already trimming costs before the position became public.
A current asset base that small next to that much estimated borrowing is exactly the kind of mismatch that turns into a solvency story once cash actually runs out, and for Salford, it did.
Balance sheet snapshot
Roughly £4m of estimated borrowings sat against only around £0.5m of current assets, a liquidity gap wide enough to be a genuine red flag even before results are considered.
Since then
The month this filing's accounting year ended, Salford asked the other Super League clubs to approve a £500,000 advance of central funding to avoid insolvency by the end of 2024. A sustainability cap followed in December 2024, forcing cuts of up to 40% of expenses. A takeover was agreed in February 2025, but players and staff still went unpaid, the club fielded a weakened side and was docked league points, and Salford were provisionally relegated from an expanded Super League for 2026 on grading grounds. On 3 December 2025, Salford City Reds (2013) Ltd was wound up in the High Court over an unpaid tax bill, ending the club's 152-year history. Bradford Bulls were promoted into Salford's vacated Super League place for 2026, and supporters have since been working to establish a phoenix club.
Takeaway
Salford Red Devils' 2024 accounts already showed a club with debts several times the size of its readily available assets, and the events of the following eighteen months turned that accounting warning sign into the end of a 152-year-old rugby league club.
